Why Seeing Your Skin Color Matters
I know, I know. You may be clicking on this blog because you are surprised by the title. I really am not trying to be a click bait here, but hear me out on this. When you are looking for a photographer it is important to see your skin color in your potential photographer’s portfolio.
I feel pretty strongly about this because as a Latina I have had my skin color almost completely changed through the editing of photos. You may have a picture in your head of a picture where you thought, “Wow… I am pretty positive I am actually not that color.” It is the reason that I stay away from trending editing styles and lean into a True Tone editing style. Because when you look at your photos I want you to see yourself!
Now, not all photographers have had the opportunity to photograph different ethnicities and skin colors. You see that their editing style is the style you are hoping for, and decide to book with them. That is amazing! You are helping diversify their portfolio and trusting them with yourself.
A note on style of editing. If you find a photographer that has beautifully warm tones that speaks to you, then go with that photographer! My advice would be to ask for photos of a similar skin tone, if they have those available.
With all of that being said, I truly believe that all skin colors should be truly represented and not washed out. Whether you have a warm or cool undertones, fair or dark complected, you deserve to look like yourself in your photos. I hope you find a photographer that makes you feel seen and represented!
